About The Newton Housing Authority

The Newton Housing Authority was established by municipal ordinance on April 14, 1969. Its work placed immediate emphasis on the growing need for affordable senior housing in the Town of Newton and greater Sussex County community.

To address this need, the Housing Authority designated a parcel of land on Liberty Street as the proposed site for what would become known as Liberty Towers. Situated in the heart of the Town of Newton’s Historic District, it became the second high-rise building in the County. On September 11, 1974, the Housing Authority received a Certificate of Occupancy from the Town of Newton. Liberty Towers became the first public housing authority in Sussex County and to date, remains the only public housing authority in Sussex County.

Since its construction, the role of Liberty Towers’ in our community has continued to evolve. Partnerships with many nonprofit, government, and corporate organizations have assisted the Newton Housing Authority in identifying new ways to enhance the quality of life for its residents. With the support of its residents, staff, and volunteers, Liberty Towers has become one of the most desirable places to live in its community; boasting of 2 ½ acres of beautiful lawns and garden areas, decorated and carpeted corridors, patio areas and much more.

Liberty Towers presently offers 80 rental units to seniors or those who are at least age 55 and disabled or at least 62 years of age and whose income meets standards set by the US Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). The building has 48 studios and 32 one-bedroom apartments.
